HSA Bank’s History

The State Bank of Howards Grove, which started in northern Sheboygan County in January 1913, was the forerunner to HSA Bank. HSA Bank would emerge from this rural community bank decades later. In 1997, the State Bank of Howards Grove joined the consumer-driven healthcare sector by offering MSAs. Citizens Bank is in the process of integrating Mellon Bank’s retail operations, sold the bank roughly 7,000 accounts and $20 million in balances in May 2002.

In 2002, the State Bank of Howards Grove adopted the trading name MSA Bank. After the introduction of health savings accounts (HSAs) in 2004, MSA Bank refocused its efforts and resources on HSAs, renaming itself HSA Bank.

Benefits of HSA Bank

  • When using the HSA Bank Health Benefits Debit Card with a PIN, transaction fees may apply. You may see your HSA Bank Interest and Fee Schedule or Explanation of the HSA Bank Fee Changes document for relevant fees.
  • Health Benefits Debit Card offered by HSA bank gives you signature or PIN access to your HSA money for point-of-sale and ATM withdrawals. The Health Benefits Debit Card that HSA bank provide has a daily debit card maximum of $5,000 at healthcare merchants such as a doctor’s office or hospital and $3,500 at non-healthcare merchants that offer qualified medical items and/or services, e.g., a department or grocery store.
  • The maximum number of debit card transactions per day is restricted, and it varies depending on how the card is used and the types of transactions performed. These restrictions are in place to protect against fraud. You may contact the number on the back of your Health Benefits Debit Card for additional information.
  • Consult your Health Savings Account Fee and Interest Rate Schedule for any applicable costs for ordering checks.
  • There may be a fee for each ATM withdrawal.

Note: While withdrawing HSA funds from an ATM, be sure you choose “checking” (not “savings”) as the kind of account you’re withdrawing from.

Online Transfer 

You can also transfer funds from your HSA to an external bank account, such as a personal checking or savings account, using HSA Bank’s Member Website. To protect against fraudulent behavior, there is a daily transfer restriction of $2,500.

Checks  

You can pay yourself for an IRS-qualified medical expenditure using your HSA Bank checks. Simply write yourself a check from your HSA and deposit it into your personal bank or savings account.

Pay for IRS-Qualified Expenses With Your HSA

It’s simple to use your HSA to pay for IRS-approved medical costs. We provide a variety of handy payment alternatives for current and future healthcare bills, including deductibles, co-insurance, medications, vision, dentistry, and other services.

An HSA Bank is a special type of tax-advantaged account that may be used to pay for current or future medical costs. You must have accessible funds in your account to pay for a service or make a transaction.

Make the Most of Your Health Benefits Card 

Your HSA Bank Health Benefits Debit Card gives you signature or PIN access to your HSA money at the point of sale. Medical merchants are the only ones who may use their debit cards at the point of sale, according to HSA Bank. Transactions on your debit card are limited to your current balance.

Use Online Bill Pay

To pay for regular and point-of-sale transactions, you can obtain a book of 50 checks3. Log in to the Member Website, go to the Accounts tab, Banking/Cards, and then Order Checks. Checks will be sent in two to three weeks.
